Australia's John Howard Dismisses Rumors Of Resignation
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Sydney, Australia (AHN) - On his 67th birthday, Australian Prime Minister John Howard has dismissed rumors he will resign from public office, declaring he was still fit and active. He said, "I know it's a corny old saying, but you are as old as you feel." He started the day walking, visited schools and received hugs from pensioners in a day packed with public engagements. But the question hangs how long the former lawyer will remain in the job with his treasurer Peter Costello openly declaring he wants the job if Howard would quit. Opposition leader Kim Beazley has demanded the premier to make a definite declaration if he would run again next year. He said, "What he's got to do now is say to the Australian people he's going to contest the next election." Unfortunately for the aspirants of the post, the premier, who was once nicknamed "The Energizer Bunny," remained tightlipped on his future plans. He adds, "I don't feel under any pressure." Howard assumed Australia's premiership in 1996 and is only the second prime minister to remain 10 years in office.
