ASEAN Demands Release Of Myanmar Political Prisoners
Josephine Roque - All Headline News Staff Writer Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (AHN) - The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) released a joint statement demanding the release of political prisoners in Myanmar. The indefinitely worded statement mirrors the association's hesitance to denounce the country, according to sources. The language used for the demand is presupposed to refer to pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. "We expressed concern on the pace of the national reconciliation process and hope to see tangible progress that would lead to peaceful transition to democracy in the near future" in Myanmar, the ASEAN statement said. "We reiterated our calls for the early release of those placed under detention and for effective dialogue with all parties concerned," it added.
