Fears Mount Of Taliban-Like Regime In Somalia
Jacob Cherian - All Headline News Staff Writer Mogadishu, Somalia (AHN) - Thousands of outraged Somali demonstrators promised to fight troops from Somalia's neighbor, Ethiopia. The Ethiopians have sent troops across the border to protect Somalia's weak government from Islamic militants. The protesters, who packed a stadium in Mogadishu, burned an Ethiopian flag and carried signs saying, "We Must Fight Them." Ethiopia, a largely Christian country has been a longtime enemy of Somalia, dominated by Islam. The rally was organized by the Supreme Islamic Courts Council militia - a group that seized control of the capital and southern Somalia subsequent to months of bloody battles. The leader of the group has also been linked to the Al-Qaeda and has put in place strict religious rule, creating fears of a Taliban-style regime. Amina Hagi, a mother of four in Mogadishu told the AP, "I came here to show that the presence of Ethiopian troops in Somalia is illegal." The new government was established with the support of the United Nations two years ago. However, the body has no real power, no military and only operates in Baidoa, 240km from Mogadishu.
