Four Boats Carrying Migrants Caught in Canaries
Megan Shannon - All Headline News Staff Writer (AHN) - Spanish authorities intercepted four boats in the last 24 hours carrying 250 migrants trying to reach the Canary Islands. Two boats reached the islands of Tenerife and la Gomera on Saturday and two reached Gran Canaria on Friday. All four boats were coming from the African coast. About 11,000 illegal migrants have been caught trying to reach the Canaries this year. That is more than the total for 2005. The trek to Europe is a dangerous one for the vessels. 12 of the migrants had to hospitalized when authorities found them and many were suffering from dehydration. The migrants will be kept in holding centres and the Spanish government has 40 days to either take them home or release them.
