Floods Kill 19 In Japan
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Tokyo, Japan (AHN) - The number of people killed from floods and mudslides triggered by heavy rains the past few days have risen to 19 as Japanese officials have issued evacuation warning in areas southwest of the country. Local officials in the city of Minamata issued the warning to an estimated 30,000 of its residents as 400 millimeters (16 inches) of rain has fallen over 30 hours in the region. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the heavy downpour will continue over the weekend because of the monsoon. A police spokesman said the body of an 86-year-old woman was discovered in a rice field near her residence after she fell into flood waters in Ogushi in Kagoshima prefecture located southwest of Tokyo. The spokesman said, "She was sent to a nearby hospital but her death was later confirmed." The police in Gifu in central Japan said a 16-year-old high school student remains missing after he slipped into a river swollen by overnight of heavy downpour.
