Israeli Soldiers Take Lebanese Village
Nicole King - All Headline News Staff Writer Israel-Lebanon Border (AHN) - Israeli soldiers have taken control of a large village just inside of the Lebanese border following a night of bombing and artillery fire. The village of Maroun al-Ras was taken by the several Israeli soldiers Saturday. The raid is part of a larger strategy by the Israeli military to destroy Hezbollah's hideouts, weapons stashes, and tunnels. A U.N. official says between 300 and 500 Israeli troops are thought to be in the western sector of the Lebanon border with as many as 30 tanks. This is likely an indication of a larger ground force Israel will be using. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says she will visit the Middle East over the weekend, which will be her first trip to the area since the violence began. A massive evacuation effort for Americans and others foreigners in Lebanon has gotten more frantic. Ships are lining up at Beirut's port to aid in the evacuation. Officials say by the end of the weekend, more than 8,000 of the 25,000 Americans will have been evacuated.
