Tsunami Death Toll In Indonesia Hits 659
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Pangandaran, Indonesia (AHN) - The Indonesian National Disaster Management has placed the death toll from Monday's tsunami to 659 after emergency workers found some100 bodies in previously inaccessible area along the Java island's southern coast. It was reported Saturday in Yahoo News that nearly 100 bodies were found in a part of Ciamis district that had been cut off completely because of a collapsed bridge. Drajat Santosa, an official at the NDM said the discovery of the bodies put the death toll to 659 with 330 others still missing. Previously, government figures placed the fatalities at 547. On Monday, a powerful quake measuring 7.7 magnitude struck off the coast of Java island sending towering waves up to two meters high into a 110-mile stretch in the island's southern coast, destroying scores of houses, restaurants and hotels. Cars, motorboats, and dead bodies were left mangled amid fishing nets, furniture, tress and other debris.
