The protesters demanded that the United Nations take action and pass a resolution to stop the violence. About 300 people gathered in Jakarta blacked traffic at a road junction in the city displaying banners and Palestinian flags. Protest organizer Nana Juhana told the Associated Press, "We condemned the attack by Israel on Palestinian territories and Lebanon. Israel should stop the atrocities against civilians in Lebanon and Gaza Strip." About 500 people protested in the city of Ambon in central Indonesia, where more Muslims live than in any other country. Religious leaders in Pakistan denounced Israel and prayed that Lebanese and Palestinians in mosques across the country would be safe. At more than one gathering, protesters burned U.S. and Israeli flags were burned. "Israel is attacking Lebanon and Palestine just because it is being supported by America," top religious lawmaker Maulana Fazal-ur Rahman told a crowd of about 600 people in the northwestern city of Peshawar. "Muslim countries should also extend their full support to Lebanon and Palestine without feeling fear," he said.
