Evacuation Of Indians From Lebanon On Course
Jacob Cherian - All Headline News Staff Writer Dubai, UAE (AHN) - The evacuation of Indians stranded in Lebanon began as planned on Thursday. More than 500 boarded the Indian warship INS Mumbai at Beirut harbor. By late Thursday, 330 people were on the ship while approximately 200 were waiting to get on board. Indian ambassador to Lebanon, Nengch Lhouvum, supervised the operations. The ship which was en route for Larnaca in Cyprus; an "air bridge" is being established there for the safe return of Indians. Air India is slated to pick up the first batch of evacuees on Friday afternoon. Once they are on Indian soil, the External Affairs Ministry plans to take over arrangements for the rest of their journey home. Indians, like other foreign nationals have been forced to leave due to Israel's offensive against Hezbollah. Diplomatic sources said that another ship might be required to get all the Indians out. Three ships, INS Brahmaputra, Betwa and Shakti are encircling Lebanese waters and are able to reach Beirut harbor upon request.
