Swedish Envoy In Sri Lanka For Monitoring Ceasefire
Jacob Cherian - All Headline News Staff Writer Colombo, Sri Lanka (AHN) - Ambassador-at-Large of the Swedish Foreign Ministry, Anders Oljelund held talks with the Government on the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM). This comes amidst violence that claimed four more lives including three soldiers on Wednesday. The SLMM was established to keep a watch on the failing ceasefire in force since 2002 in Sri Lanka. It faces an uncertain future now as the LTTE has set a September 1 deadline for excluding E.U. members. This was after the EU banned the LTTE organization in May. The demand would imply that 37 members of the team would be scrapped at a time when the body has requested a 25 percent increase. Nordic countries, meeting at Oslo in June were not able to arrive at a decision regarding LTTE's demand. Nevertheless, Mr. Oljelund's visit is seen as a brand new effort by the SLMM. He is planned to meet the representatives of the Tigers on Thursday. He met officials of the Sri Lankan Government's Secretariat for Peace Process (SCOPP) as well as the Foreign Secretary H.M.G.S. Pallhakkara on Wednesday.
