Sokor Fears Pyongyang May Spark Arms Race In The Region
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Seoul, South Korea (AHN) - South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun expressed fears Wednesday that North Korea's missile launches could spark an arms race in the peninsula. The warning came after Pyongyang halted reunions between North and South relatives separated by the Korean Peninsula. But while Roh condemns the North's suspicious nuclear program and recent missile testing, he also criticized efforts by other countries to push for tougher sanctions against the reclusive socialist nation. He said excessive responses "don't help solve the issue." The president has attacked the position of Japan to launch pre-emptive strikes against Pyongyang if it continues with its missile testings. The pre-emptive strike and other tougher sanctions were supported by the US. In the face of a Chinese veto, the UN Security Council on Saturday passed a resolution preventing its member-nations from engaging into missile-related business with North Korea. The use of military forces was stricken off the resolution.
