Mumbai Observes 2-Minute Silence To Pay Homage To 7/11 Victims
Jacob Cherian - All Headline News Staff Writer Mumbai, India (AHN) - Mumbai stood still for two minutes in memory of the 181 people who died on July 11 as a result of terrorist bomb blasts on Mumbai's Western Railway suburban line. People stood quietly on roads and sidewalks, cars and buses stopped, trains in transit came to a halt and cable operators switched off telecasts when 270 sirens sounded throughout the city at approximately, 6:25 p.m. The Western Railways have also put up memorials at all seven stations. The President placed a wreath at Mahim. Hundreds of people lined up silently at other stations to place flowers at memorials. Some bowed their heads as a remembrance to the day of terror. Mahim was made ready for the President's arrival. The street outside was cleared of traffic despite the fact that it was rush hour. R.K. Bhat waiting at Matunga Road station located next to the Mahim station told the Hindu, "I am waiting for the train. A week ago also I was waiting for the same train when I saw the blast happening right in front of us. First we thought it was some short circuit but as we leaned and saw all the bodies, we realized it was an explosion." Students from a nearby college held signs that read: "Our Vigil is Our Safety." Ramakant Dayama, 50, told the Hindu, "I hope God gives the families of the dead some peace and courage to fight back. People should help ease each other's pain." Milind |
