Philippine Gov't Raises Alert Level To 4 Over Mayor Volcano
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Legaspi City, Albay (AHN) - Government volcanologists have raised the alert over Mayon Volcano to level 4 and predicted a major eruption is likely to happen within the next two weeks. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said lava flow coming from Mount Mayon's crater has reached 800 meters down the slope towards the Bonga gully early Monday. Phivolcs volcano monitoring chief Ernesto Corpuz has advised residents living near the permanent danger zone (PDZ) to immediately evacuate the area. A report by the Manila Times quoted Corpuz as saying, "Within two weeks a big bang is likely to occur. This is based on the parameters being exhibited by the volcano." Because of the deteriorating condition of the volcano, the Army's 901st Infantry Brigade under Lt. Gen. Pedro Cabuay has reactivated "Task Force Mayon." The task force will be deployed throughout the province to assist during evacuation and relief and rescue operations. An eruption in 1993 killed 79 people mostly farmers who were living along the slopes of the volcano. Mayon is famous for its perfect symmetrical shape.
