Manila Sees Libya Playing A Big Role In Peace Talks With Moro Rebels
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Manila, Philippines (AHN) - The Philippines is seeing a bigger role for the Libyan government with the on-going peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) which has been fighting for an independent Mindanao in the south of the country. Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo and National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales made the observation as they both acknowledge Libya's strong influence in the Muslim community. Romulo said, "Being an Islamic nation, Libya has influence on the Mindanao peace talks." Libya has sponsored the first peace negotiations between the government of the Philippines and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) which produced the so-called Tripoli Agreement in 1976. Since then, Libya has religiously followed on the implementation of the peace efforts in Mindanao. For his part, Gonzales said Libya has substantial clout in the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC). The Philippines has been seeking an observer status in the OIC.
