Death Toll From Indonesia Tsunami Reaches 105
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter Pangandaran, Indonesia (AHN) - The death toll is now at least 105 from a tsunami that ravaged Indonesia's Java Island. Rescuers are searching for nearly 130 people still missing after massive waves triggered an undersea earthquake on Tuesday. The waves swept away buildings, cottages and kiosks standing on Java's southern coast. Diding, a Pangandaran official, tells Reuters, "The search for victims is still going on. We will search for bodies and possible survivors... This morning the TNI (military) troops and other volunteers have arrived." Five foot-high waves brutalized Pangandaran beach, washing bodies into trees. Residents panicked when news of the tsunami spread throughout the area. Nearly 230,000 people were killed or reported missing, mostly in Indonesia, during a December 2004 tsunami. A witness says he saw the ocean pull back 1,500 feet from the beach a half-hour before the powerful wave smashed ashore.
