Industrial And Commercial Pollution Threatens Life Of Indian Village
Jacob Cherian - All Headline News Staff Writer Kerala, India (AHN) - Alapuzzha, Kerala has been honored by the Union Commerce Ministry as a center of excellence, both industrially and commercially. However, it stands to lose that distinction due to the high pollution levels at Aroor, a northern industrial village of the district. The village thrives on marine fisheries, industrial units and export houses (factories). The State Pollution Control Board has identified Aroor as the village with the maximum number of fisheries, industries and export units in the state of Kerala. It has advised that no more units be added until remedial measures have been taken to adequately address the problem of pollution in the village. Although, setting up more export facilities would mean more prosperity and employment opportunities, inspections by authorities proved that pollution at Aroor was above all acceptable limits. The situation was brought to the forefront when people residing in the area developed various diseases of the lungs and skin, according to a study done in Aroor, five years ago. The villagers of Aroor are unaware of the privileges that further developmental projects would bring. However, they have been hoping that plans for safe, drinking water supply would take place. The Pollution Control Board found that a not even a single pot of clean water could be obtained from the industrial area, as all natural sources |
