Mumbai Train Bombings Denounced At G8 Summit
Shaveta Bansal - All Headline News Staff Writer St. Petersburg, Russia (AHN) - The world's most powerful leaders on Monday denounced last week's train bombings in the Indian city of Mumbai as "barbaric". On the final day of the Group of Eight summit in St Petersburg, the G8 leaders, and those from five key emerging economies, including India, said they were "outraged by the barbaric terrorist acts, carried out in Mumbai and other parts of India". In a joint statement the world leaders said, "We stand in solidarity with the Government and the people of India and express our deepest condolences to the victims and their families". The summit also condemned perpetrators of such attacks around the world. But there was no mention of the plotters in the Mumbai attacks or signs that international pressure would be brought on Pakistan, which India blames for the strikes. The blasts, called the worst such attack in India for 13 years, have prompted sharp exchanges between India and Pakistan, and a political tumult within the country. More than 180 people were killed and nearly 900 were wounded in the July 11 bombings in Mumbai's commuter trains. The G-8 group consisting of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States, and leaders of India, Brazil, China, Mexico and South Africa said, "We are determined to continue the fight against terrorism by all legitimate means."
