Gunmen Kill 42 Iraqis At Southern Baghdad Market
Nji Che - All Headline News Staff Writer Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) - More than 42 Iraqi civilians were killed, and 60 others were wounded on Monday in what appeared to be a continuation of sectarian violence that has struck the country in the last few weeks. The gunmen opened fire at a market in the town of Mahmoudiya south of Baghdad. Mahmoudiya, a town mixed with Shiites and Sunnis, has been the scene of frequent violence over the last few weeks. The men shot indiscriminately in the open-air market, while explosions struck the area amidst the violence. Police sources said the market was attacked with mortars, meanwhile government officials said the explosions were caused by car bombs after which gunmen rampaged through it, firing at shops and civilians. According to one report, a Shiite funeral procession was the target of the attack. This report caused outrage among MPs from Moqtadr Sadr's Islamist movement. In protest, they walked out of the parliament. Before the attacks occurred, the AP reported three soldiers were killed while manning a checkpoint near the market. The attack came after 23 people were killed in a suicide bomb attack in the northern Iraqi town of Tuz Khurmatu.
