The U.N. And U.K. Call For Lebanon Peace Force
Nji Che - All Headline News Staff Writer St Petersburg, Russia (AHN) - The United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and British Prime Minister Tony Blair have both called on the international community to deploy a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon. The duo wants the mission to stop Hezbollah militants from firing their rockets into Israeli territory. A BBC news report quotes Blair saying it is the international force that can, "stop the bombardment coming over into Israel and therefore gives Israel a reason to stop its attacks on Hezbollah." The call came after Israel continued attacking Lebanon, while Hezbollah militants continued firing rockets into Jewish territory. The G8 summit leaders blamed the Lebanese militant movement for the current violence in the region. Israel attacked Lebanon last week after Lebanese militants abducted its two soldiers. In response, the militants began firing missiles into northern Israel. After the calls for a peace force, there are still doubts as to which countries will deploy peacekeepers, as well as what their mission and operations would look like. Meanwhile the U.N. has monitored the Lebanese-Israeli border since 1978, the force has not been given the right to enforce peace.
