Volcanic Eruption in Ecuador Causes Thousands to Flee
Nicole King - All Headline News Staff Writer Quito, Ecuador (AHN) - Thousands of people are fleeing their homes in the wake of a volcanic eruption. The Tungurahua volcano began spewing lava and toxic gases into the air Friday. Tungurahua is located 85 miles south of Quito. About 3,700 people have left their homes since the 16,550-foot-high volcano began its eruption. Winds are carrying ash up to 75 miles west of the volcano. No injuries have been reported, though cattle and vegetation has been lost. Scientists are reporting that the eruptions have lessened in frequency from every five minutes to every half hour. Tungurahua came back seven years ago after remaining inactive for 80 years.
