World Leaders Condemn Israeli Attack On Lebanon
Joanna Wypior - All Headline News Staff Reporter Moscow, Russia (AHN) - As the tension in the Middle East continues to worsen over the weekend with fresh violence in a Hezbollah rocket attack over the Israeli city of Haifa, European leaders at the G8 summit in Russia have condemned the hostility. Over the weekend, the G8 leaders were under intense pressure to try and prevent an all-out Mideast war. Reaction to the hostilities in the Middle East have so far dominated the G8 Summit. Russia's President Vladimir Putin says he regrets that the escalating violence in the region has heightened in the past five days and insists all opportunities for a peaceful resolution in the Middle East are used. He also called for a ceasefire of the region. British Prime Minister Tony Blair revealed that the summit leaders are working on a 'common and unified position' regarding the crisis. "We all want the situation to calm down and we want it to calm down because we urgently have to act to protect Lebanese democracy," said Blair, according to Reuters. Many of the leaders at the G8 summit have been critical of Israel's actions against Lebanon, which began five days ago with Hezbollah's capture of two Israeli soldiers, with the exception of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and US President George Bush, who is yet to throw his weight behind a call for a ceasefire in the region.
