U.K. Forces Supports Decision To Attack Afghan Town
Josephine Roque - All Headline News Staff Writer (AHN)-U.K. troops stand by their decision to request U.S. planes to attack Taliban fighters in a Helmand province town. Colonel Charlie Knaggs maintains there was no proof of civilian casualties and the strike was crucial to protect his troops. Civilians told the BBC that the aircraft dropped at least three bombs, destroying shops and a school. Combat fatalities cannot be confirmed due to ongoing fighting. Accounts vary as there are witnesses that claim there were civilian deaths and injuries while there are even reports of 25 to 200 people being killed. British forces have been guarding the district government Nawzad headquarters for a month. The US air attack was ordered because the Taliban fighters were already nearing to takeover the base and British forces had been under siege for two weeks. British troops told BBC the school was being used by the Taliban to launch mortars.
