Rebels Kill 12 Soldiers In Sri Lanka

Colombo, Sri Lanka (AHN) - Fighting in Sri Lanka has left at least 16 people dead.

A battle between the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) and the LTTE in Vakaneri, Batticaloa, killed at least 12 soldiers, when rebels opened up with mortars and small arms fire.

SLA army spokesman, S.A.P.P. Samarasinghe tells The Hindu, "Yes, there was a battle with the LTTE. However, we are not in a position to confirm the number of those killed."

According to reports, the SLA has approached the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for the return of the 12 bodies.
