Iraqi Bomb Blast Kills 7 Near Sunni Mosque
Nji Che - All Headline News Staff Writer Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) - At least seven people were killed on Friday after a bomb planted in a Baghdad street went off, as Sunni Muslims in northern Baghdad returned home after prayers. In a separate incident that occurred almost the same time, six mortar rounds struck a Shi'ite mosque in Balad Ruz, a town northeast of Baghdad. Two people were killed and five others wounded at the incident. Both incidents come amidst escalating sectarian violence in Iraq. Last week, at least 40 Sunnis were killed on Sunday after Shiite gunmen invaded a western Baghdad street, pulling Sunnis out from their cars and along the street before killing them. Police confirmed the gunmen killed more than 40 Sunnis in the scattered attacks that occurred on a street in the Iraqi capital. Several hours after the incident, two car bombs exploded near a Shiite mosque in the north of Baghdad. The attack, which appeared to be revenge, killed 17 people and wounded 38. Iraqi security authorities speculate the violence was in response to the initial Shiite-led attacks. Early Monday, a couple of car bombs exploded nearly simultaneously in a Shiite area of Baghdad. The blasts killed close to ten people and wounded dozens more. Sunni leaders have condemned sectarian violence, calling for calm across the country.
