Japan and U.S. Continue To Push For Stronger U.N. Resolution Concerning N. Korea
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Beijing, China (AHN) - A draft UN resolution prepared by China and Russia is considered "soft" by Japan and the United States who are calling for a stricter sanctions against North Korea. The new draft is expected to be voted upon by the United Nations Security Council after a high-level delegation from China arrives from Pyongyang where they are holding talks with the North Korean government. The Chinese-Russian draft is directed towards looking for diplomatic solution over the furor created when North Korea test fired seven missiles off the Sea of Japan. The missile test also underscored the need to immediately check Pyongyang's nuclear program. But the US and Japan said the Chinese and Russian version have serious gaps and instead are pushing for their own draft resolution which calls North Korea a "threat to international peace and security. The draft also invokes Chapter Seven of the UN charter. Invoking Chapter Seven would authorize the economic sanctions and even military actions. The US-Japan draft is backed by Britain, France, and five other UN Security council members. Both the US and Japan are pressing for the Council to immediately vote on the two drafts. Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe and the official spokesman on the issue said his government will not wait forever for the Council to vote on the resolution. Tokyo obvio |
