Coalition Air Strike Kills 19 Afghan Militants
Nji Che - All Headline News Staff Writer Kandahar, Afghanistan (AHN) - A coalition air strike launched on Wednesday in Afghanistan killed 19 Taliban militants, the government said. The offensive was launched after a wave of renewed insurgency hit the Taliban stronghold in southern Afghanistan. The U.S.-led coalition struck insurgents in Nawzad district in the southern province of Helmand on Wednesday, after they ambushed and killed two Afghan policemen. A government statement said, "Twelve Taliban were killed in one area and seven in another. Many of them were wounded in the bombing." Helmand is one of Afghanistan's most violent provinces. U.S., British and Canadian troops, along with Afghan forces, have continued to fight against Taliban resistance in the region since 2001. A coalition military spokesman admitted there was fighting, but did not mention casualties. In a separate incident, police in Kabul arrested a man while trying to plant a bomb near the Information Ministry. NATO forces, most of them from Britain, Canada and the Netherlands, will soon launch peace missions in Helmand and five other southern provinces beginning July 31. When NATO deploys its forces, the United States will withdraw some of its 22,000 troops stationed in the country.
