Farmers Clash With Police Over Protest Of US-S. Korea Trade Talks
Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Seoul, South Korea (AHN) - An estimated 30,000 demonstrators clashed with the police to protest the third day of the on-going trade talks between the US and South Korea. It is being reported that the protesters gathered in center Seoul and threw missiles and overturned buses. They were met by riot police who fired water cannons at them. So far there are no reports of arrests or injuries in the clashes. The demonstrators, mostly farmers and laborers, are protesting the on-going talks between the United States and South Korea to slash tariffs and remove the thorny issue of trade barriers between the two economies. South Korean dissenters said the agreement could lead to an influx of cheap imported products from the US. But the Americans are fearing loss of jobs when more US companies outsource their operations in Seoul. Both governments agree the deal would boost economic growth and further strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries. An agreement with Seoul would be the biggest free trade treaty the US will enter into after signing the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) with Canada and Mexico. Nafta was created in 1993.
