China And Russia To Introduce Weaker UN Resolution Against N. Korean Missile Tests
Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer Moscow, Russia (AHN) - China and Russia will introduce their own United Nations resolution, to counter the current one, which proposes sanctions on North Korea for testing several missiles. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu says that a resolution imposing sanctions, like the one favored by the U.S. and Japan, "will intensify contradictions and increase tension." "It will harm peace and stability in the Korean peninsula and Northeast Asian region and harm efforts to resume six-party talks as well as lead to the U.N. Security Council splitting." In the United States, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says the White House "believe[s] very strongly that North Korea has to have a message from the international community that their current course is destructive and will isolate them, but we do think that the Chinese mission to North Korea has some promise and we would like to let that play out." South Korea, and others, have been urging the North Koreans to return to the six-party talks, aimed at ending the communist nation's development of nuclear weapons. However, since the missile tests, Seoul has suspended aid shipments to the North, a key element in unification talks between the two nations.
