Scotland Considers Ban On Children For Addicts
Megan Shannon - All Headline News Staff Writer Edinburgh, Scotland (AHN) - Scotland is considering a new labour plan that will discourage drug addicts from starting a family until they are clean. The controversial plan will provide drug addicts rehab, housing, medication, and counseling for free as long as they do not use, commit to regular drug testing and have no children. If addicts breech this contract their treatment will be discontinued. The plan may be adopted into the Labour's election manifesto if it gains enough support. Some officials are calling this plan vicious but most agree with some aspects of it, deducting some very extreme ideas. Right now 60,000 children live with drug-addicted parents in Scotland. These measures are under discussion as a result of some tragic cases where children have died due to neglect from using parents. Officials say that even if these children survive growing up in this type of environment, it causes irreparable damage to their lives and education. Member of Scottish Parliament Duncan McNeil said, "Having a family while you are coming off drugs or on a drug rehabilitation programme is absolutely mad. We should be using every means possible to dissuade people (in this situation) from starting a family." McNeil also suggested that female drug users be given money to buy contraceptives and that it be made easier to remove children from homes where drugs are being used. |
