India Rules Out Any Military Intervention If War Breaks Out In Sri Lanka
Som Patidar - All Headline News Staff Writer New Delhi, India (AHN) - India rules out any military intervention if war breaks out in it's neighboring country Sri Lanka, The Island reported on Saturday. The Indian authorities told the daily, "we have no plans to send our troops to Sri Lanka if the current tense situation there degenerates into a full-fledged armed conflict between the security forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam." "India will do everything short of military intervention to find a political solution to the ethnic problem within a united and sovereign Sri Lanka that will satisfy the Sinhalese, the Muslims, the Tamils and others," the authorities said. India has bitter relations with Sri Lanka. In 1987, the Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had sent the military at the specific request of Sri Lanka to disarm the LTTE. But later, the LTTE killed Gandhi, India's youngest Prime Minister.
