Review of Iraq Murders Finds Possible Cover-Up
Nicole King - All Headline News Staff Writer Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) - A review of the deaths of 24 civilians in a small town in west Iraq has reportedly found an alleged cover-up by Marines to hide the cause of the deaths. The murders happened in the town of Haditha. The findings of the review have not been officially made public but were forwarded to the top commander in Iraq. The review reportedly found that a number of Marines filed false reports claiming the civilians were killed by roadside bombs. Also, that higher officers ignored the evidence that there may have been criminal activity in the case. Some of the evidence in the case that backs up those claims are photos showing the victims were killed by gunshots, death certificates for the victims that list gunshot wounds as the cause of death, and the fact that a Marine officer paid the victim's families $38,000 in compensation. Reports initially said the deaths were a result of a roadside bomb and a gunfight that followed. The military said most of the findings should be released in two week. Meanwhile, Iraqi officials have ordered their own investigation into the killings.
