China Floods On Thursday Kill At Least 30
Hector Duarte Jr. - All Headline News Staff Reporter Beijing, China (AHN) - Storms and torrential rains have slammed eastern China on Thursday, leaving 13 million people affected by flooding and storm damage. Severe weather in the provinces of Jiangsu and Anhui has killed at least thirty people and precipitated the evacuation of about 40,000. Residents have reportedly been forced to use rafts in order to navigate through flooded streets. The government stated earlier this week that at least 349 people died in disasters caused by the nasty June weather. Roughly 99 people were missing and the cost of the flooding was estimated to be at about $2.5 billion. The most recent violent storms have hit Jiangsu hardest. Zhao Jie, of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, tells the China Daily News, "So far, 27 people are reported dead, nearly 40,000 have been evacuated, and more than 8,400 houses have collapsed." In the neighboring province of Anhui, three more people were killed. Every year, seasonal downpours and typhoons cause hundreds of deaths throughout China.
