Baghdad Gun Battle Kills Seven
Hector Duarte Jr. - All Headline News Staff Reporter Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) - Police and witnesses say at least seven people were killed in Baghdad on Friday, following clashes between Shia militia group and U.S. and Iraqi forces. The battle waged on for four hours as Mehdi Army fighters, who are loyal to radical Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr, fought troops in the eastern district of Sadr City. Iraqi officials reported about thirty people injured. Meanwhile, the U.S. said troops were executing a raid aimed at arresting an "insurgent leader" responsible for a series of attacks. The intended target was reportedly Abu Dera, a senior figure in the Mehdi Army. The raid may have been connected to the abduction of a Sunni woman MP captured in Baghdad Sunday. Sadr City is a large slum in the east of the capital populated mainly by Shia Iraqis and home to many militants who support Moqtada Sadr. The U.S. says no American of Iraqi forces were harmed during the battle. Since the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime back in 2003, the Mehdi Army has regularly fought U.S.-led coalition forces.
