Macedonian PM Concedes Victory To Opposition Leader
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter New York, NY (AHN) - Macedonian Prime Minister Vlado Buckovski concedes victory to opposition leader Nikola Gruevski in the general election. BBC News reports with over a third of the votes counted, his Social Democrat coalition was behind the main nationalist opposition party. VMRO-DPMNE party had 33 percent of the vote with 36 percent of the votes counted. Buckovski's Social Democratic Union (SDSM) had just 24 percent of the vote. Mr. Buckovski says in his concession speech he phoned Gruevski to congratulate him. He says, "The opposition got the most votes and support of the citizens." Although there was violence during campaigning, voting on Wednesday was conducted peacefully. The European Union considers the vote an important factor in how quickly Macedonia will be able to join the group. Buckovski says, "We want to tell the citizens that we'll be in the parliament to continue to work for Macedonia to be part of the EU integration."
