U.S. To Return Air Force Base In Turkey As Two Nations Sign Agreement
Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer Washington, D.C. (AHN) - The U.S. Department of Defense will return an Air Force base in Turkey. The news comes on the same day as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice signs an agreement with Turkey. According to the Pentagon, "due to U.S. European Command force structure realignment and transformation, the Yumurtalik Sea Terminal's jet fuel receipt point facility has been identified as excess to U.S. Air Forces Europe's needs and will begin the process to be returned to the host nation." Also in Washington, Secretary Rice meets with Foreign Minister of Turkey Abdullah Gul to sign a "statement of the strategic vision for U.S.-Turkish relations." Secretary Rice says "the Foreign Minister has been stalwart in his support for young democracies like Afghanistan and Iraq, and I thank him very much for that." Minister Gul adds that Turkey and the U.S. "will have the opportunity to talk further about bilateral, regional and international matters of common concern, including Iraq, Iran, combating the PKK, recent developments in the Middle East, Cyprus and energy issues."
