Iraq Calls For Independent Investigation Into U.S. Military Rape Case
Nji Che - All Headline News Staff Writer Kuwait (AHN) - Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki on Wednesday said he would request a separate Iraqi probe into the U.S. military rape and murder case. The incident which occurred in Baghdad alleged U.S. soldiers raped an Iraqi teenager and killed her along with three of her family members. Maliki was speaking on Wednesday during a visit to Kuwait. During a news conference, he told reporters, "Yes, we will demand an independent Iraqi inquiry, or a joint investigation with multinational forces." Adding that, "We do not accept the violation of Iraqi people's honor as happened in this case. We believe that the immunity granted to international forces has emboldened them to commit such crimes and ... there must be a review of this immunity." Steven Green, 21, a former U.S. soldier was arrested and charged in a U.S. court on Tuesday. He is one of the soldiers alleged to have taken part in the crime. This is the fifth U.S. inquiry into killings of Iraqi civilians in recent months. Green was arrested by FBI agents on Friday in North Carolina. He currently faces a possible death penalty if convicted. According to a statement issued by the US attorney in Kentucky, Green is charged with going to a house near Mahmoudiya with three other people to rape a woman living in the house.
