Report: Israeli Soldier Kept In Gaza Bunker
Jacob Cherian - All Headline News Staff Writer Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) - An Israeli newspaper reported Wednesday that the Israeli soldier captured by Palestinian militants is being held in an underground bunker in the Gaza Strip. The Yedioth Ahronoth daily said Corporal Gilad Shalit and seven Arab militants were living in a secret basement containing food supplies.Israel believes Shalit is in southern Gaza. It has sent troops and tanks into the region. Shalit was captured after a cross-border raid from Gaza on June 25. The difficult task of negotiating Shalit's release has come to a standstill. Israel has not given into demands for the release of hundreds of jailed Palestinians in return for the 19-year-old Israeli soldier. The dilemma has been worsened by the fact that some of Shalit's kidnappers are associated with Hamas, which ruled the Palestinian government. Yedioth reports the militants are relying on aboveground "bosses" to communicate with the outside world. They have turned off their mobile phones as a precaution against surveillance by Israeli intelligence services.
