Heavy Rains Bring Mumbai To a Standstill
Shaveta Bansal - All Headline News Staff Writer Mumbai, India (AHN) - India's financial capital, Mumbai, was brought to a standstill after heavy showers lashed the city for the past few days. The weather forecast for Tuesday also showed gloomy torrential rains and gusty winds. Though monsoons were late this year, the rain provided a sigh of relief to the baking Mumbai residents. But a continuous pouring has led to flooding in some parts and disrupted rail and air traffic. The heavy rains have revived the memory of the torrential rains of 2005, which claimed hundreds of lives in Mumbai. School and college authorities have sent their students home by mid-morning while offices also asked their employees to leave early. Civic officials never fail to point out that central Mumbai is shaped like a saucer, and rainwater cannot flow out when there is high tide. This has been pointed out as the reason for perennial flooding in places like King's Circle, Parel and other low lying areas. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) spokesman, D. Shivjathak, told this paper that waterlogged areas were King's Circle, Hindmata Cinema, Nul Bazaar and Wadala in central Mumbai, in the subways of Andheri, Khar, Milan, Malad and Dahisar in the western suburbs and Postal Colony in Chembur, Bhandup, Mulund and RCF Colony in the east.
