Preliminary Results Have Calderon As Winner Of Mexican Elections
Hector Duarte Jr. - All Headline News Staff Reporter Mexico City, Mexico (AHN) - Preliminary results seem to indicate that conservative Felipe Calderon has win the Mexican presidential election. Electoral authorities give Calderon the narrow win margin of just over one percent above leftist opponent Andres Manual Lopez Obrador. Obrador claims inconsistencies in the returns and says he will challenge a Calderon victory. Final results will not be verified until a final count takes place later this week. According to the BBC, Calderon told Mexican television, "I won the election... it is irreversible." Early results issued by the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) gave Calderon the lead by 36.38 percent of the vote as opposed to Lopez Obrador's 35.34 percent. IFE says the verification process will begin Wednesday. If Calderon ends up victorious, the win will quell what has been dubbed "the rise of the left" throughout Latin America. The outcome of this vote is being closely watched throughout much of Latin America but especially in the U.S. where migration from Mexico remains a hot-button issue. Among those 70 million eligible to vote, thousands are U.S. residents. A decision was made to allow Mexicans living abroad to cast their votes for the first time in history.
