Train Derails, Kills 34 In Valencia
Josephine Roque - All Headline News Staff Writer (AHN) - An estimated 34 people perished when two of the train's carriages crashed and derailed in an underground train network in the eastern Spanish city of Valencia. The high speed and collapsing train wheel were the determined causes. The injured amounted 22 people. BBC reports that the train driver and a pregnant woman were reported to be among those seriously injured. Another 150 people were escorted to safety while emergency services worked to help trapped passengers in the train. Briton Graham Moore, a resident of Valencia, described to BBC a "chaotic and confusing" scene 15 minutes after the accident. "There were lots of police running around, kids with their parents. There were people with heads bleeding, cuts and bruises. The injuries appeared to be just head, neck and chest injuries - they were quite seriously injured." Spain's Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, is in India for a visit. He offered his condolences to the families of the victims. No news yet if he will be cutting his trip short. On the possible causes, government spokesman Luis Felipe Martinez tells BBC, "It seems this unfortunate accident was caused by excess speed and a wheel breaking just before it entered the station."
