Mexican Presidential Election Too Close To Call
Hector Duarte Jr. - All Headline News Staff Reporter Mexico City, Mexico (AHN) - Mexico's presidential elections fail to signal a clear winner. A quick vote count based on sample figures was expected to generate a result within hours of the polls closing. With both candidates running almost 50-50, officials have decided to count all votes before declaring a winner, which could take as long as Wednesday. The outcome will be watched closely throughout Latin America especially in U.S., where migration from Mexico is a key concern. Leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is running against conservative Felipe Calderon. Voter turn-out was high, after a campaign highlighted by political insults traded back and forth, and an increase in drug violence. Some officials reportedly fear violence and political chaos if no clear winner is declared. Obrador's party has accused Calderon of corruption by passing government contracts to his brother-in-law, allegations he denies. Among those 70 million eligible to vote are thousands living in the U.S., following a decision to allow those Mexicans living abroad to vote for the first time. Congressional elections are also being held.
