Nicaraguan Presidential Candidate Dies Suddenly Of Heart Attack
Hector Duarte Jr. - All Headline News Staff Reporter Managua, Niacaragua (AHN) - A candidate in Nicaragua's upcoming presidential elections, Herty Lewites, died suddenly after suffering a heart attack. Lewites, 65, a center-left ex-mayor of Managua, had split with former president Daniel Ortega's Sandinista Party and was third in a recent poll. His candidacy was expected to split the Sandinista vote and harm Ortega's chances of winning. Lewite's party president Dora Maria Telle told the Associated Press he suffered from long-standing heart problems and died at a Managua hospital. In the 1970's, he lived in Mexico, where he studied business before returning after Somoza regime was overthrown. When Ortega took office after the 1979 revolution, Lewites became tourism minister. The party eventually lost power in 1990. Lewites was banned from the Sandinistas after challenging Ortega for the presidential nomination when he attempted to make a political comeback in 2000. He then formed the Sandinista Renovation Movement, which attracted disillusioned members of Ortega's party.
