Playboy Indonesia Under Investigation For Indecency
Mary K. Brunskill - All Headline News Staff Writer Jakarta, Indonesia (AHN) - The editor of Playboy Indonesia and two models who were photographed for the magazine's first issue are being investigated for violation of indecency laws, police said Friday. Although the first issue contained no nudity, the April launch of Playboy Indonesia, which was issued from the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, incited protests, including attacks on the magazine's Jakarta office. Indonesia is the most populous Muslim country in the world. Jakarta police spokesman Ketut Untung Yoga said models Andara Early and Kartika Gunawan had posed indecently in the issue and editor-in-chief Erwin Arnada should also be held accountable. Despite the protests, Playboy Indonesia put out a second issue in June, this time issued from Bali, a Hindu area of Indonesia where conservative Islam has little influence. Arnada wrote in the editorial of the June edition, "The absence of a growing monopoly of set values and views in our beloved country in the end is our final purpose. We believe that is also the target of all of us who live with reason and want to understand the meaning of democracy and a pluralistic society." Jakarta police have said they want Playboy to refrain from publishing again until they investigate accusations it may have violated laws. Yoga told Reuters under current law, offenders of public indecency laws face a maximum penalty |
