Chinese President Denounces Corruption
Nji Che - All Headline News Staff Writer Beijing, China (AHN) - Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday urged members of his party to put an end to corruption. Hu was addressing members of the ruling Chinese Communist Party on the occasion of its 85th anniversary. Hu said, "We cannot slack off for one moment," adding that, "Anti-corruption and building a clean government are an important strategic mission." The call was made a day after the government deposed Wang Shouye, a deputy commander of China's navy for sex and bribes allegations. Shouye is the latest victim of the Communist Party's drive to curb corruption. Earlier this month, China sacked Beijing Vice Mayor Liu Zhihua. He was accused of bad conduct in the supervision of infrastructural projects for the 2008 Beijing Olympic games. Chinese authorities have convicted close to 2000 state officials over the last twelve months for corruption charges. Last year, China launched a national anti-corruption drive that investigated 8500 government officials over corruption allegations. According to Hu, putting an end to corruption in China is an important issue for the ruling party. He decried the fact that corruption is still very present in some state agencies, citing that the government continues to receive several reports against corrupt officials.
