Eight Suspected Militants Shot Outside Indian-Controlled Kashmir
Hector Duarte Jr. - All Headline News Staff Reporter Kashmir (AHN) - The Indian army reports it killed eight suspected militants who tried to cross the Line of Control into Indian-controlled Kashmir. An army spokesman says the gunfight took place early Friday when the militants cut the barbed wire fence in the Keran area and tried to move through. Indian officials say there has been an increase in militants attempts to cross the de facto border in the last few months. There has also been an increase in attacks throughoutKashmir recently following a period of relative peace. Indian army spokesman Col H Juneja told the Associated Press, "The militants opened fire when they were challenged and a six-hour-long gun battle ensued." he said. "We have found eight bodies and a cache of arms and ammunition." India alleges militants cross into Indian-controlled Kashmir during the summer, when snow on high mountain passes melts. Delhi claims there are militant training camps across the Line of Control in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Islamabad, however, denies these charges.
