Malaysia Suggests Asian Human Rights Institution
Josephine Roque - All Headline News Staff Writer Kuala Lumpur (AHN) - Malaysia's foreign minister suggested organizing an institution to advance human rights in Southeast Asia. It could be an outlet for building human rights programs in the 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. "I believe its establishment will create a positive ripple effect going through not just this region, but expanding in an outward motion" Foreign Minister Syed Hamid said in a written speech according to the AP. His speech was read by a senior official of his ministry, S. Thanarajasingam. The speech noted that the proposed new mechanism could give ASEAN nations the opportunity to help each other develop a strategy for strengthening the rule of law, judiciary systems and legal infrastructure. It adds it will be for "effective and efficient civil services and good governance in the public and private sectors." Malaysia is also questioned for using colonial era law that makes indefinite detention without trial of people deemed threatening to national security.
