Kenyan Man Sentenced To 30 Years For Hauling Cocaine
Hector Duarte Jr. - All Headline News Staff Reporter Nairobi, Kenya (AHN) - A Kenyan man gets 30 years in a Nairobi jail for his role in one of Africa's biggest cocaine trafficking operations. David Mugo Kiragu was found guilty in a Nairobi court. Five other suspects, including two Italians, were acquitted. The 18-month trial was littered with controversy amid allegations of corruption and tampering of evidence. The trial came about after Kenyan authorities seized 1.1 metric tons of cocaine, worth more than $88 million in 2004. Kenya is still seeking the extradition Kiragu's brother. They think he is the one who spearheaded the entire operation. He is currently serving a jail term in the Netherlands. The drug stash was destroyed in a very public display in February to quell rumors that that the drugs had been sold. Over 950 sachets of cocaine were charred in front of journalists, diplomats, members of the judiciary and the suspects arrested for trafficking the shipments.
