Israel Sends Fighter Jets Into Syria As Gaza Incursion Continues
Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer Damascus, Syria (AHN) - Syrian officials say its air force chased Israeli planes out of its airspace, after a "hostile and provocative act." Israeli fighter jets few over the country home of President Bashar al-Assad in Ladekye, in an effort to pressure Syria to force Palestinian militants to return a kidnapped Israeli soldier. Syrian state-media reported the air force intercepted the Israeli jet, and "forced them to separate and leave the area." The program made no mention of the jets flying over the Presidential home. The move comes after Israeli ground troops moved into the Gaza Strip, in what it calls "Operation Summer Rains." According to a statement from the Israeli Defense Force (IDF), "Operation Summer Rains commenced last night [Tuesday] in response to the kidnapping of Corporal Gilad Shalit by Palestinian terrorists." "The [Israeli Air Force] bombarded strategic targets in the central Gaza Strip while IDF ground forces entered the southern Gaza Strip. The operation aims to disrupt Palestinian terrorist groups, and to facilitate the return of Corporal Shalit to Israel as quickly and peacefully as possible."
