Soviet-Era Landmine Kills U.S. Soldier In Afghanistan
Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer Kabul, Afghanistan (AHN) - A landmine, probably placed to kill invading soldiers from the Soviet Union, has struck a U.S. vehicle traveling in Afghanistan; killing one soldier, and wounding others. Army Maj. Gen. Benjamin C. Freakley, commander of Combined Joint Task Force -76 tells the Armed Forces Press Service, "We sincerely regret the loss of our fellow soldier today; his sacrifice will not be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers extend to the family of our lost soldier and to the families and comrades of our wounded soldiers. We hope for a full and speedy recovery." The Pentagon says, millions of land mines lay unmarked across Afghanistan, remnants of a quarter century of conflict, adding that this incident does not appear to be related to extremist activity. Also, elsewhere in Afghanistan, Coalition forces raided a Taliban compound, killing 12 extremists in a firefight. Afghan soldiers assigned to 1st Kandak, 1st Brigade, 205th Corps, and Coalition forces struck a compound in Uruzgan province, which officials say was often used to plan attacks on civilians, as well as Coalition forces. The Pentagon reports two Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers suffered superficial wounds from the battle and were treated at their base camp.
