Latest Coal Mine Explosion Hits China
Richard Rittierodt - All Headline News Staff Writer Beijing, China (AHN) - At least 22 people were killed in a coal mine explosion on Wednesday in north China. Reports from the scene have 37 others injured in the Wulong Coal Mine in Fuxin, a city in the Liaoning province. The mine is owned by the Fuxin Mining Group, a state enterprise that also owns the Sunjiawan mine where 214 people were killed in a Feb. 14, 2005, blast. Authorities also stated that they had now recovered all 56 bodies of miners, that were killed in a seperate mine flood in northern China's Shanxi province. The Xinjing mine had flooded on May 18 while 266 workers were inside the mine. 210 of the workers were able to escape. China's coal mines are the world's deadliest, accounting for about 80 percent of all such fatalities anywhere. There were 5,986 miners killed in 3,341 explosions, fires and floods in 2005 - about the same as in 2004.
